b
Beith, birch-tree, the second letter of the Gaelic alphabet now in use. It sounds somewhat harder than b, and softer than p in English. When immediately followed by h, it has an aspirated sound like v in English, as bhuail, struck. At the end of a word or syllable, however, the aspiration sometimes passes, in certain dialects, into the sound of the vowel u, as searbh, bitter; fiabhras, fever; and before consonants it is frequently silent.
