-ar, -thraichean, dat. pl. màthraichibh, sf Mother. 2 Dam of a beast. 3 Cause, source. Mo mhàthair, my mother; cha bhruich thu meann 'am bainne a mhàthar, you shall not seethe a kid in its mother's milk; màthair adhbhair, a primary cause. A Highlander when addressing his mother, sometimes says “a bhean,” woman, like the Hebrews of old; but when writing to her, or in apostrophising, he uses “a mhàthair,” not “a bhean.”
